Emirates Dubai Stopover: The Free Hotel You Can't Request, and the One You Can Book

"Emirates gives you a free stopover hotel" and "Emirates sells a Dubai stopover package" are two different programmes, not two names for the same thing. One is free but you cannot ask for it, the other has no price published anywhere and has to go through an agent. There is also a third option nobody selling either program mentions: booking your own hotel and a flexible layover tour instead of waiting on either one.

Search for “Emirates Dubai stopover” and the results mix Emirates’ own free Dubai Connect service, its separate paid Dubai Experience package, and a UK travel agency’s long-expired promotion, as if they were one program with one answer. They are not. One of them you cannot book on purpose. The other has no price anywhere public.

Quick answer
Dubai Connect is Emirates’ free hotel, meals and transfer for a long connection, but it is only offered when no better connection time exists for your itinerary, at Emirates’ own discretion, and it comes with whichever hotel and duration Emirates assigns. The paid Dubai Experience package lets you choose your own hotel and length of stay, but has no published price and has to be booked through an Emirates office or a travel agent. A third route exists that neither program advertises: book your own hotel and add a flexible private layover tour, from 2 to 10 hours with airport pickup and drop-off built in.

Two different things get called “Emirates stopover”

The confusion is structural, not accidental: Emirates runs a free service and a paid package at the same time, under names close enough to blur together online.

The detail that decides which one applies to you is simple: Dubai Connect is compensation for an inconvenient routing, not a stopover you can request for its own sake. If you want to choose your hotel, your dates, or how long you stay, that is the paid package, not Dubai Connect, however long your actual layover turns out to be.

Seeing Dubai without waiting on either programme

A third option covers most of what both programmes are trying to solve: book your own hotel if you want one, and separately add a layover tour sized to however long your actual connection is. The best-reviewed option built specifically for this is private, with pickup from any of Dubai’s three airport terminals, the cruise terminal, or a hotel, including one assigned through Dubai Connect.

Nine duration options from 2 to 10 hours, picked to match however long the actual layover is, with round-trip transfers from any of the three airport terminals, the cruise terminal, or a hotel. Stops at Burj Khalifa, Jumeirah Beach, Burj Al Arab, Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai and Old Dubai, with a private guide and air-conditioned vehicle.

Dubai Connect: the free hotel you can’t request

Emirates’ own page is specific about the condition that most summaries skip: “You can book our complimentary Dubai Connect service as long as there are no better connection times to choose from for your itinerary.” That is not the same as “any connection over a certain number of hours qualifies.” If a shorter connection existed and you were not put on it, you likely will not get Dubai Connect at all, regardless of how long your actual wait in Dubai turns out to be.

Once eligible, the booking flow itself confirms it: log in to Manage Booking with your surname and reference number, and add the service at least 12 hours ahead of your incoming flight, per the main instructions on Emirates’ page. The same page’s terms give a second, different deadline: bookings are only accepted at least 24 hours before that flight’s departure. The two are anchored to different moments, arrival in Dubai versus departure for Dubai, so the practical takeaway holds either way: confirm it as soon as the connection shows as long, not close to departure.

What is actually included: a complimentary hotel room with applicable meals bundled into that booking, a coach transfer to and from the hotel arranged at the Dubai Connect desk in Arrivals, and a complimentary 48-hour UAE visa for nationalities that need one, which should be arranged at least 48 hours before arrival. A credit card may be asked for at check-in, to cover anything the hotel booking does not, such as a minibar or a spa treatment. Flyers under 18 can only use the service travelling with someone over 18.

The paid Dubai Experience: no published price, booked through an agent

Emirates’ own page for this one reads differently from Dubai Connect’s: no self-service booking flow, no tiers, no figures. “Bookings can be made via Emirates offices (where available) or through your preferred travel agent,” who assembles hotels, attractions and flights into one itinerary and quotes it directly. That is a materially different model from Qatar Airways’ equivalent programme, which publishes four self-service tiers starting from $14 per person per night and can be booked online by almost anyone with a 12 to 96 hour transit. There is no equivalent published starting price for Emirates’ package to compare it against.

What the page does promise: a choice of hotel category, city break, beach resort or desert escape, a fully customisable itinerary built around tours, Marina cruises, museums and theme parks, 24-hour hotel check-in so arrival time does not matter, and flexible cancellation. One perk applies regardless of which route you take: keeping hold of your Emirates boarding pass qualifies for My Emirates Pass, a discount card honoured at hundreds of venues across Dubai, restaurants, spas, golf days and theme parks among them.

At least one UK travel agency’s page describing a complimentary one-night stay (at the Novotel World Trade Centre Dubai for Economy and Premium Economy, or the 25hours Hotel Dubai One Central for Business and First) ties that offer to a sales window that closed in June 2024. Treat any agency page quoting a specific free-night offer as needing a fresh quote, not a current price.

Is the Emirates Dubai stopover free?

Only one of the two programmes is, and you cannot choose it. Dubai Connect, Emirates' complimentary hotel, meals and transfers for a long connection, is offered only when there is no better connection time available for your itinerary, at Emirates' own discretion. The paid Dubai Experience package, bookable through an Emirates office or a travel agent, has no free tier and no published price.

How do you get Dubai Connect, and how far ahead do you need to book it?

You cannot request it directly: Emirates' own booking flow tells you if your itinerary qualifies when you manage your booking, using your surname and reference number. Emirates' page gives two different deadlines in two different places, 12 hours ahead of your incoming flight to Dubai in the main text, and 24 hours before that flight's departure in the terms. They are anchored to different moments, so the safe reading either way is the same: do it as soon as you know the connection is long, not at the last minute.

What does Dubai Connect actually include?

A complimentary hotel stay with applicable meals included in the room booking, a coach transfer to and from the hotel, and a complimentary 48-hour UAE visa for nationalities that need one, arranged at least 48 hours before arrival. A credit card may be requested at check-in to cover anything outside that, such as minibar snacks or spa treatment.

Can someone under 18 use Dubai Connect on their own?

No. Emirates' own terms state that flyers under 18 can only use Dubai Connect travelling with another passenger who is over 18.

How much does the paid Emirates Dubai Experience package cost?

Emirates does not publish a price anywhere on its own site. Booking goes through an Emirates office or a travel agent, who puts together the hotel, flights and any tours or car rental as one itinerary and quotes it directly. That is a different model from Qatar Airways' equivalent programme, which publishes four self-service tiers starting from $14 per person per night.

What is My Emirates Pass?

A discount card tied to your Emirates boarding pass, per Emirates' own page: showing it at participating restaurants, spas, attractions, golf courses and theme parks across Dubai gets a discount, independent of whether you book Dubai Connect or the paid package.

What can you actually do on a layover without waiting for an agent's quote?

Book your own hotel, or take Dubai Connect if offered, and add a flexible private layover tour instead: durations from 2 to 10 hours with airport pickup and drop-off, built specifically around transit passengers rather than full-day visitors.

Spent a trip through the Gulf from 7 to 17 December 2023: Bahrain on the 11th, Dubai and Abu Dhabi over the 13th, 15th and 16th, Doha on the 17th. One trip through the Gulf, not four separate ones, which is the whole reason this site exists instead of a single-city blog. One trip three years ago does not make anyone an expert on a region, which is why every price, floor number and opening time here is checked against the operator's own site before it goes on a page, not remembered from the trip.

Verified: The distinction, eligibility condition and included services for Dubai Connect, plus the two different booking deadlines on the same page, from emirates.com's own Dubai Connect page, checked 7 November 2026. The paid Dubai Experience package's booking process, inclusions and the My Emirates Pass perk, from emirates.com's own Discover Dubai page, same date. The Qatar Airways comparison figures, from the research already verified for this site's own Qatar Airways stopover guide. The layover tour's price, rating, review count and duration options, from Viator's live bookable inventory, same date. The expired UK travel agency offer and the hotels it named, from that agency's own published page, same date.

Not verified: Whether Dubai Connect is actually offered on any specific booking, since Emirates states this depends on discretion and the available connections for that itinerary, not a fixed rule we can apply in advance. What a quote for the paid Dubai Experience package actually costs for a given itinerary, since no price is published and it varies by agent and season. Whether every nationality's transit visa situation outside Dubai Connect's 48-hour visa matches what is described here; check directly with Emirates or UAE immigration for a specific passport.
