Is the Qatar Airways Stopover Worth It? The Free Hotel vs. the Paid One
Two different programmes get talked about as one: a free hotel Qatar Airways sometimes owes you, and a paid package almost anyone can book. They come with different rules, including one about your luggage that changes the decision entirely. Plus when to walk Souq Waqif and the Corniche, checked against Doha's own heat.
“Qatar Airways gives you a free stopover hotel” and “Qatar Airways sells a cheap stopover package” get repeated as if they are the same fact. They are two different programmes, with different eligibility, different rules, and one detail about your luggage that most articles never mention at all.
Two different programmes, and almost every article treats them as one
Qatar Airways runs both at the same time, and the confusion online is real because the marketing names are close enough to blur together.

The baggage rule is the detail that should decide which one you want, and it is the one detail most articles skip. If you are eligible for the free night but want your suitcase with you in Doha, Qatar Airways states plainly that you have to convert the booking to a paid Stopover instead, for an extra fee, rather than keep the free accommodation as originally granted.
If you have one day: the desert safari with the Inland Sea
For a stopover long enough to fit one paid activity, the standout by review volume is a Qatar-specific one: Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, a body of water reached only by 4x4 through the dunes, bundled with the usual dune bashing and camel ride. A night version without the Inland Sea also exists, for a shorter stopover or a later flight.

The Inland Sea is the part no other Gulf city has: a natural border with Saudi Arabia reachable only by dune driving. This is the most-booked way to see it, by a wide margin over any other Doha tour we found.

Skips the Inland Sea, since it runs after dark, but costs less and fits a stopover with an early morning connection better than a half-day trip does. A shorter camel ride is included, no sandboarding.
What the paid Stopover actually costs
Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways’ own booking arm, publishes four tiers. The headline number is a per-person rate assuming two people share the room, which is easy to misread as the price of the room itself.

Add an airport transfer and, if you want it, a discounted tour, which is where Souq Waqif or a desert safari usually get pitched to stopover passengers. Over 100 nationalities enter Qatar visa-free for this; check your own before assuming it.
Souq Waqif: go after dark, not during the day
Qatar’s own tourism board is specific about this: Souq Waqif is busiest and most alive after dusk, when the roadside cafes fill with people, shisha and Arabic coffee, and stay open into the early hours. Visiting in the flat heat of the afternoon gets you the same alleys with a fraction of the atmosphere.

The Corniche: seven kilometres, and the heat decides when
The Doha Corniche is a seven-kilometre waterfront promenade curving the length of the bay, and unlike Souq Waqif it is entirely outdoors with limited shade. Whether that is a pleasant walk or something to avoid depends entirely on the month.

August’s average feels-like temperature, 45.4°C, is a degree hotter than Dubai’s equivalent month by the same measure. A full end-to-end walk of the Corniche in that heat is not really an option; a short evening stretch near sunset is a different, entirely reasonable thing.
Is the Qatar Airways stopover free?
Sometimes, and that is where most articles get vague. Complimentary Transit Accommodation is free, but only if there is no Qatar Airways flight to your next destination within 8 hours of arrival, and it is granted at Qatar Airways' discretion. The paid Qatar Stopover package, from $14 per person per night, is bookable by anyone with a 12 to 96 hour transit, whether or not they qualify for the free one.

From $14 per person per night for a 4-star Standard hotel, $24 for 5-star Premium, $31 for Premium with beach access, and $83 for 5-star Luxury with breakfast. Read the small print: that rate is per person based on two people sharing, so travelling solo roughly doubles the real cost of the room.
When should I visit Souq Waqif?
In the evening, not during the day. Doha's own tourism board describes it as busiest and most alive after dusk, when the roadside cafes fill up and the heat has dropped. It holds a 4.5-star rating across roughly 9,000 reviews on Tripadvisor, evidence this is not a one-off opinion.
How long is the Doha Corniche, and when should I walk it?
Seven kilometres end to end, following the bay. Given Doha's own climate averages, walking any real distance of it between June and August, when the average feels-like temperature is over 41°C, is a different undertaking than doing it in December or January.
